In this analysis of the opening to White Chapel, I will be analysing the ways in which class and status is presented using sound, editing, mise-en-scène and camera shots/angles.
To start with, there is an obvious distinction between both the protagonists that are focused on in this opening sequence. One is seen in an upper class setting, where they are smoking cigars, drinking whisky and relaxing whilst speaking work related. Whereas the other is seen fighting off crime in what looks like a lower class area of London. So already we are seeing a clear distinction in class. We can denote that there is a difference in class due to the way that they speak and the vocabulary used when speaking. The gentleman in the bar uses much more sophisticated language with a posh English accent whereas the women PCO has a much more limited vocabulary spoken with a strong southern accent. Shot reverse shot/over the shoulder shots used for gentleman, presenting a relaxed environment. Tracking shots are used when following the gentleman into the bar, showing his high status. Smooth camera shots and movements take place with the gentleman signifying the calm and relaxed atmosphere within that setting. Contrastingly, we see much more hand held camera work whilst filming the women fighting off rioters. This gives us a sense of the atmosphere within both this scenarios. In terms of editing we see more rapid movement and interchange on the street than in the bar. Again, this presents and sense of atmosphere within these situations. Linking back to class and status, it shows the difference in tensions and stress between these two characters class. Another way used to distinguish class and status, was the use of clear council housing, dark bridges, trains and cobble stone roads. In the urban setting we see a much darker and browner light, this technique of lighting is often used to present a slightly less wealthy area. The sound within the opening varies based of amounts tension, but generally has a rather eary vibe to it. Violins are a key instrument involved, this could possibly be interpreted into class.
