Abridged - Rough Cut No.4

Abridged (finalised idea)

2 Characters: Kieran (20 years old)
                      Michael (60 years old)

Michael = successful businessman / very wealthy
              = depressed due to a tragic accident involving the death of his beloved wife

Kieran = criminal youth (drug dealing thug)

The film opens with the 2 characters waking up on a standard morning. We see the older man wake up first and take the picture from his bed-side table to then kiss it and spread a tear (at this point we don't know whats on the picture). A jump cut then takes place to Kieran waking up and smoking a cigarette. The images behind both of these characters will be totally different due to there difference in wealth and class. A series of jump cuts then take place between both of these characters. We then see both characters getting ready to go out. The elder gentleman goes to visit the cemetery where his wife is buried. then we see the Kieran waiting underneath dark tunnel then threatening another fellow youth (shouting at him for his money, whilst hands around his neck). we then see Michael on his hands and knees by the grave crying and praying. Jumps to Kieran doing a drug deal down and discrete alley way. Once again jumping to Michael walking depressingly down a dark path. the moment we see the characters both meet is on the bridge where they both walk past each other. The older man then waits at the peak of the bridge where he looks suspiciously like he is going to jump. Kieran walks past him and looks intrigued as to what   is up-to. Kieran makes himself hidden whilst still watching Michael until Michael moves. Michael carries on staring down over the bridge with a rather depressed look upon his face. Michael is about to jump but is then stopped my Kieran screaming "stop! get down from there man"

At this point the opening ends and a time lapse takes place of the bridge with thew water running beneath it. The title then appears above

Ill Manors opening sequence

This is the opening sequence to Ill Manors, which in parts has a similar sort of theme to our film opening.  We have taken a few ideas out of this opening to add to ours. The theme of Ill Manors is social realism. Likewise, so is ours. Shots similar to these will be included in our opening:

This particular shot is a time-lapse, then the title appears in large block writing. We will be using the same concept but over a bridge with a running river beneath it.

  The opening shots of the film include a short montage of titles with backgrounds behind them. These background are outer city areas of America (where exactly is not provided).
  
  Duration of titles including company idents = 1:20 



The font is all in upper case and is also in bubble writing. The bubble writing may signify it being a comedy. The backround to these titles is a what looks like outer city area of America. Giving the viewer a sense of where the film may be set. 

The title of the film is clearly much larger than the rest of the titles. The backround behind this title is a rough looking alley involving a crime scene of some sort. 



 The 'and' is written much smaller than the name. It is also in lower case.

Film Opening (analysis, research and evaluation)

Whilst analysing, researching and evaluating the generic conventions of the film openings, i have come to a conclusion of the main aspects i have been looking for:

For example:

• Any narrative enigma? e.g. any glimpses of the set or the protaganist of the film
• The setting of the opening scene (denotations and connotations)
• Genre signifiers
• Audio (Diegetic or Non-Diegetic)
• Exposition 
• Use of camera angles and shots (e.g extreme long shot, close up etc...)
• The length of the opening scene and how the shot crosses to another shot (e.g cross fade, shot reverse shot etc...)
• The font of the Title and subtitles that may appear. They may be a certain font to connote or signify something significant 
• Props and locations (one location or multiple locations?)
• Editing 
• Costume (may signify the set or genre of the film)
• Characters (age, gender, class etc..)
• Sound/music (is it continuous soundtrack audio bridge?)
• Intertextuality - where the meaning of one text is linked to the meaning of another text
• The use of colours to help the viewer understand the atmosphere of the scence

This is England Frame analysis

• The frame clearly includes the council houses in the background - this shows the set of the film and the conditions/area Shaun lives in



• The car is an old car - this connotes that the film is set in the past and helps to achieve verisimilitude



• Also 'Maggie is a twat' is graffitied on the wall - again connoting that the film is set in the past tense when Maggie was Priminister



• The area looks very rough and Shaun is all alone at a young age - showing the community must be close as he is quite vulnerable in that situation and he can be trusted alone

• Denote that the title is centrally framed



• Bold/bubble styled font - connotes childishness (central protagonist is a child)



• Title is white with black marks - signifying decay



• picture behind the title is a rough looking council estate - this presents the set of the film and connotes that the film will be based on working class people and lives



• Upper case font - this anchors the reading that this is a statement
